Nominate outstanding partnerships between employers and education
To honor innovative partnerships between employers and California’s secondary and post-secondary institutions, the California Economic Summit is sponsoring a contest with the winners earning the opportunity to showcase at the 2017 Summit.
The Partnerships for Industry and Education (PIE) Contest will announce the winners just before the annual meeting in San Diego on November 2 and 3.
Do you know of a partnership that should be considered for the PIE Contest? Nominate someone now to participate. Nominations will close August 11.
Nominees will be invited to submit a short, three-page application and the top three submissions will be invited to present their partnership at the Summit and empower important policy decisions. Complimentary two-day event registration to the Summit and a one-night hotel stay are also included.
All submissions that meet the minimum criteria will be highlighted in the “Promising Practice Guide to Strategic Partnerships for Industry and Education.” This is a great opportunity to celebrate the great work being done in the regions and share promising practices across the state. Linked Learning program certifies career pathways for quality and results
As the number of career pathways available grows, it's important the growth is accompanied by a commitment to pathway quality. Linked Learning Certification and Analytics are solutions for the career pathways field designed to do just that.
Together these platforms reveal the impact of career pathways through school district, college, and employment data and empower districts to make improvements. The platforms are built to take into account the priorities of colleges and employers so that school performance is certified and rewarded by meeting the needs of these stakeholders.
In order to successfully connect students to college and career, we need to consider the needs of employers, as well as postsecondary programs. Since the platforms launched in January, more than 200 schools – representing 500,000 students – registered and are regularly using the platforms to monitor and improve their pathway programs.

SoCal workforce development board customizing apprenticeship programs with local industry
Faced with a retiring workforce and decreased interest in engineering and manufacturing jobs, a Southern California workforce development organization is gearing up to improve the workforce pipeline of skilled employees to meet employers' labor market needs.
The South Bay Workforce Development Board received two grants for the development of customized, innovative engineering pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship models designed to support the Advanced Manufacturing Sector and industry in the South Bay.
In addition to registering the apprenticeship with the Division of Apprenticeship Standards, the group is focused on identifying relevant skill sets to narrow the skills gap, educational and other work-based learning opportunities for students to learn about the variety of careers available in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering.
