The Citizens Redistricting Commission selection process is approaching the end of a critical stage next week as more than 120 semi-finalists are being interviewed. The applicant pool will be narrowed to the 60 most qualified people sometime after September 13. The final panel of 14 members will redraw the state’s political boundaries based on the 2010 Census, a process that will involve hearings and testimony from citizens across the state. The following is a brief profile in a series being offered by California Forward as we closely monitor this critical selection process.
Candidate: Sandor X. Mayuga
Born in Lynwood, California, Sandor X. Mayuga has made Long Beach his home. Mayuga says he aspires to join the Citizens Redistricting Commission to redraw districts that will return California as a leader among states and to meriting the respect and reputation it once had.
As a business lawyer the last 36 years, Mayuga has employed his consensus-building skills to help ensure transactions occur for his clients. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Law School, he is currently a shareholder with the law firm Keesal, Young & Logan.
An American of Asian and Hispanic descent, Mayuga has also served as an intelligence officer in the U.S. Airforce for 16 years where he collected and evaluated intelligence information, assessed its usefulness and determined its reliability.
Mayuga is married and has been involved in different community activities. He has served as president of the Long Beach Area Council, Boy Scouts of America where he worked to make the Boy Scout program accessible to youth from underserved communities.
