In the latest PolicyWise podcast (S3, E8), CA Fwd’s Young Leaders Advisory Council (YLAC) took center stage at the November 2021 California Economic Summit in Monterey. The panel, moderated by Stephanie Estrada, included Sauntharya Manikandan, Mark Borges and Nicole Crawford, all YLAC members.
The panel discussed the importance of intergenerational collaboration in policy solutions when engaging youth to address a wide range of topics from climate action to broadband access.
“It’s not enough to provide a seat,” said Crawford, a UCLA student and a fellow at Her Health First. “When you provide a seat where we don’t see action, that is what we like to call ‘performative politics.’”
Borges, currently an executive fellow with the California Natural Resources Agency, asked Summit attendees to think about how to incorporate youth into their work by “creating mentorship programs, creating fellowships and internships, allowing spaces for youth to grow and develop and take on these issues that we have been discussing.”
The PolicyWise podcast is a partnership between Youth Leadership Institute and CA FWD and can be heard on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Breaker Audio, RadioPublic, Pocket Casts and Overcast.
