With the 2020 California Economic Summit a week away, this week’s episode of PolicyWise looks back at the first Youth Plenary Session presented at the 2019 Summit. Youth Leadership Institute Director of Communications Tim Haydock joins hosts Demitria Wack and Michael Wiafe to discuss the impact of that session and how the youth voice is becoming more important in shaping California’s policy discussions.
The session titled, “The Future of the California Dream” was one of the most popular sessions of the Summit, according to CA FWD CEO Micah Weinberg. It featured Stockton Unified School Board Member Lange Luntao, Jasmine Dellafosse, senior regional organizer for The Gathering for Justice, AP Armour, executive director of Neighborhood Industries and Kieshaun White, founder of Healthy Fresno Air.
Haydock spoke about the impact YLI wanted to make, saying “How can we make sure that the stage for 30 minutes really captures a different type of voice, a different type of work that is going on in California that is really critical to civic engagement and to making our communities more healthy and more just for everybody?”
The Youth Plenary Session will return to the 2020 Summit Main Stage on Friday, December 4. “The Next Generation of Leaders” will feature CA FWD Young Leaders Advisory Council members Ellinor Arzbaecher and Jade Magaña, Lucas Public Affairs Director Daisy Castellón and Wiafe.
The California Economic Summit will be held virtually December 3-4. You can check out the program and register to attend the Summit here.
