San Diego’s politics-themed festival, PolitiFest, was a big hit on Saturday, drawing hundreds of southern Californians and their families to learn about government and community-based organizations.
California Forward was on hand at the event – hosted by VoiceofSanDiego.org and NBC 7 San Diego – to talk about the importance of everyday Californians helping hold their elected leaders accountable, to ensure that government is open and honest and focuses on results.
California Forward’s booth featured a quiz on facts about California and coloring pages with markers and glitter pens for kids. Those with perfect quiz scores will be recognized on Facebook. While the average score was 7 out of 10, San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox scored a 10 out of 10 and (not surprisingly) correctly answered the bonus question, “How many counties are in California?” Answer? 58.
Other fun activities throughout the plaza at Liberty Station included a bounce house, dunk tank, and obstacle course for the kids, and a beer garden for grown-ups. Sea World brought mascots like a plush Shamu to work the crowd, while political candidates and community non-profits set up booths throughout the park to mingle with the crowd.
At the main stage, seven candidates for next year’s race for Mayor of the City of San Diego participated in the first debate of the season, and citizens lined up to compete in an Ideas Tournament, sharing their best recommendations for improving conditions in the San Diego region.
