A dozen remarkable women who have made a major commitment to their communities – including California Attorney General Kamala Harris – were honored at a gala earlier this month, hosted by the National Women’s Political Caucus, Los Angeles Westside Chapter (NWPC, LA Westside).
The Remarkable Women Leaders’ Calendar Gala celebrated these dynamic women by featuring them in a 2012 Calendar, which was unveiled at the Gala. It includes photos and a biography of each honoree’s outstanding background in service to help improve their communities and the state.
Many of the honorees focused their remarks on the importance of leadership, civic engagement, and empowerment, invigorating the more than 200 guests at the gala.
Honoree Kafi D. Blumenfield, Executive Director of the Liberty Hill Foundation said, “Although this is an honor, it is more a challenge of 365 days of women’s leadership” in our community.
Fellow honoree Elena J. Popp, Attorney and Housing Rights Activist, discussed her recent success in the fight to keep a local La Puente resident’s home from foreclosure. Each honoree had a story to tell, and they all were thankful to NWPC for celebrating service to women and the community.
Statewide officials were also honored at the Gala. In a video address, Attorney General Harris thanked the NWPC for the honor and praised them for their commitment to supporting remarkable women over the years. Assembly members Betsy Butler (AD 53) and Holly Mitchell (AD 47) talked about the need to increase the number of women in the legislature, as well as their commitment to empowering women and the voiceless in their communities.
NWPC LA Westside President and Forward Thinker, Lindsay Bubar, and Former NWPC LA Westside President and Forward Thinker, Robyn Ritter Simon encouraged all guests to get involved in the work to engage and empower people in their communities to move California Forward.
Other honorees included: Sue Dunlap, Bettina Duval, Wendy Mitchell, Torie Osborn, Natalie Parmenter, Debra Spector, and Meghan Sahli-Wells.
