Many of the Summit’s regional partners, like leaders for First 5, have identified early childhood learning as critical to the long-term economic picture in California communities.
The Summit network has supported actions that prioritize early learning and child care such as the recommendations of the Lifting Children and Families Out of Poverty Task Force, cross-sector partnerships in high-quality child care and preschool, and the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit (CalEITC).
To promote child literacy, First 5 will hold a Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros celebration on the North Lawn of the Capitol on Tuesday, April 30 from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. (See event flyer for more details).
First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom will host a bilingual story time beginning at 11 a.m. and will follow up with remarks on the Capitol steps.
The State Library will lead literacy activities and the First 5 Express will offer music and art interaction. Before and after the event, First 5 staff will visit legislators in their offices to advocate for young children.
Día de los Niños is a Mexican holiday that recognizes the importance and influence of children in society. In 1997, the first Día de los Niños/Día de los Libros was celebrated in New Mexico to honor children and promote literacy.
In addition to Newsom, State Librarian Greg Lucas, First 5 Executive directors, and commissioners, First 5 staff from around the state, leaders from partner organizations, and families and children served by First 5 will participate.
