Deputy Director - Policy and Communications
Justin Ewers works at the nexus of communications, coalition-building, and policy development driving California Forward’s efforts to build a more transparent, outcomes-oriented government. Justin is currently leading a policy and communications team for the California Economic Summit, a project connecting regional leaders around a shared agenda to generate jobs and improve regional competitiveness. Areas of focus include infrastructure, water, transportation, CEQA, and sustainable communities. Justin is also supporting CA Fwd’s efforts to develop a more robust Rainy Day Fund.
Between 2010-2012, Justin worked on the policy and communications teams supporting Speak Up California, a California Forward project that engaged more than 15,000 people from across the state in a conversation about reforming state government. Justin served on the team that developed and organized Speak Up’s more than 60 statewide public meetings, using new technology to solicit feedback on and refine these reform ideas. He also served as lead writer of the Smart Government Framework, a strategic action plan that took this feedback and translated it into a set of specific policy proposals that became the basis for the Government Performance & Accountability Act, a measure that appeared on the 2012 ballot
Prior to his work for California Forward, Justin spent a decade in journalism, most recently as the California correspondent for U.S. News & World Report. As a senior editor at the magazine, he spent eight years writing about higher education, Western politics, and Silicon Valley. His work has also appeared in the Washington Post, Scientific American, and Sunset magazine.
Justin holds a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in history from Stanford University.
